Mysuru: With the State Government granting permission for water sports activities at Kabini backwaters in H.D. Kote taluk of Mysuru district, city-based advocate V. Ravikumar has appealed to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi to intervene and revoke the approval.
In a letter addressed to the NGT Chairman, Ravikumar expressed concerns that water sports would disrupt the region’s ecology and endanger wildlife, dense forests and aquatic life. He emphasised that the Kabini backwaters border Bandipur and Nagarahole National Parks, which are ecologically sensitive areas.
Ravikumar also pointed out that numerous unauthorised resorts have already emerged in the forests surrounding the backwaters. Instead of taking action against these encroachments, the Government has further aggravated the situation by permitting water sports — a move he called misguided given the area’s fragile ecosystem.
The letter urged the National Green Tribunal to intervene in the matter and cancel the Karnataka Government’s permission for water sports and adventure activities in the Kabini backwaters to protect the region’s biodiversity.
