Mysuru:  Chairman of Prasar Bharati, New Delhi, Dr. Arkalgud Surya Prakash called upon students to have single-minded devotion, aim and dream to succeed in their mission, chosen career, profession and in life.

Delivering the first Convocation address of JSS Science and Technology University (JSSSTU) at SJCE camps in city yesterday, he wanted engineering, all Technical Universities and other students to work hark with all determination, dedication and diligence to fulfil their dreams in life.

Highlighting that the nation is facing dearth of skilled talents despite the presence of huge number of human resources, he said that 58 percent of the workforce were in deficit in talents, only 3.5 percent employees in India has less skilled workforce when compared to 98 percent in Korea, 80 percent in Japan, 75 percent in Germany, 58 percent in UK and 52 percent in USA.  

Emphasising that skilled talent is must for the growth of the economy of any nation, he said that the policy makers, educational institutions and universities must put all sincere efforts to improve the skills of the workforce.  

He also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi for initiating Skill India and many  other skill improvement programmes with main intention to ensure skill training to five crore persons in the next two years.

Lagging behind filing patent applications

Dr. Surya Prakash also regretted that India, which had a population of 130 crore, is lagging behind in filing patent applications to claim the Intellectual Property Rights for the products and designs produced in the nation.

According to World Intellectual Property Indicators of 2017, inventors from around the world filed 2,43,500 IPR applications  under the Patents Cooperation Treaty (PCT). US-based applicants filed 56,624 applications followed by China 48,882, Japan 48,208, Germany and Republic of Korea ranked fourth and fifth with 18,982 and 15,763 applications, but Indians filed 1803 applications which tells about its sorry state of affairs in patent filing.

Korea, which is smaller in size, economy and population when compared to India, had filed more patent applications.

He further said the rate of literacy which was just 18 percent seven decades ago has now risen to over 70 percent. Per capita Income which was Rs.250 at the time of Independence has now increased to 1.13 lakh. The per capita income of residents of Delhi estimated Rs.3.29 lakh.

The circulation of daily news papers has also increased to 275 million in 2017 which was 22.60 million during 1990s. India has highest second largest internet users of 4.6 crore after China in the world. 250 million households has 197 million TV sets and 152 million cable connections.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor of JSS Science and Technology University Dr. B.G. Sangameshwara said that JSSSTU  has more than 6000 students and university growing every year.

Degrees conferred

Earlier, JSSSTU conferred degrees to 149 M.Tech, 96 MBA, 24 Corporate Finance candidates at its first convocation held at SJCE campus.

A total of 13 Medals were awarded to the students who have scored highest marks in respective branches and four Endowment Medals.

Suttur Mutt Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji, who is also the Chancellor of JSS University, conferred the Degrees and Medals to the achievers.

Controller of Examinations Dr. K.N. Udayakumar administered the oath for the degree holders.

Prof. M.H. Dhananjaya, Advisor, Technical Education Division; Dr. K.S. Lokesh, Registrar of JSSSTU, Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, Executive Secretary of JSS Mahavidyapeetha and others were present.
