Mysuru: Heavy rains lashed the city last night, throwing normal life out of gear in many parts, even as water entered many houses in low lying areas. Trees were uprooted in a few areas. However, due to the unscientific work taken up in several parts of the city, people had to suffer a lot.
The pipe-laying work has been taken up in many areas and the way the mud has piled up, has caused many pedestrians to step on them and as it sunk, they fell and suffered injuries.
In a few places, the roads are full of ditches and potholes and it was a nightmare for two-wheeler riders to negotiate them. A few of them even lost control of their vehicles, fell down and sustanined injuries.
There were dense clouds from yesterday afternoon itself. It started raining around 6 pm accompanied by thunder and it poured for a long time. In Brindavan Layout a huge tree was uprooted that fell on a car, which was completely damaged. In a few other areas the branches of trees fell, disrupting the traffic. A few roads had almost turned into lakes because of water logging.
There was almost two-feet deep water near KR Circle, Bamboo Bazaar Circle, Vinayak Nagar, Valmiki Road, Adi Chunchanagiri Road in Kuvempu Nagar, that caused problems to pedestrians and motorists.
Even on Jodi Thenginamara Road in Bannimantap, the rain water had turned into a pond. Due to unscientific planning instead of the rainwater draining into the nearby drains, it was flowing on the road that always has a heavy traffic of lorries. This also caused a lot of problems to the vehicle users.
Jamboo Savari route
The much-touted Raja Marga paved with concrete, on the Jamboo Savari route in Bannimantap, is also unscientifically built, is what was exposed due to heavy rains this time. Instead of scientifically constructing shoulder drains, the authorities concerned have badly botched it up, resulting in water logging on this prestigious road. The footpaths had been dug for laying cables and pipelines and this resulted in overflowing of mud along the road.
Road users curse
The pool of rainwater was causing problems to the pedestrians and even two-wheeler riders on Raja Marga. The footpaths here, occupied by street vendors, forced the people to walk on the roads. Thus, every time a four-wheeler passed by hitting the deep trenches water would splash on them. They were heard cursing the Traffic Police and the Corporation authorities.
Problems galore this morning: The low-lying areas in Ghousianagar, Shantinagar and Beedi colony in the east of Mysuru all had to suffer a lot, as water had gushed into houses and the roads were lying in pool of water, this morning.
A few of the two-wheelers parked outside were found floating and washed away. The schoolchildren had a tough time negotiating the water-logged roads to reach their schools.
The roads in Paduvarahalli (Vinayakanagar), near Mathru Mandali (between Samudaya Bhavan) were water-logged. Many areas suffered power cuts and it returned only around 11.30 pm.
Even Amritha Layout, opposite Narayana Hrudalaya, where there are houses built under NURM scheme, was completely water logged.
The Abyaya teams with gangmen from the MCC and accompanied by Zonal officers and engineers were found clearing many roads in Shantinagar, Ghousianagar and Beedi Colony this morning.
