Evaluator’s bungling in totalling deprives city SSLC student of 30 marks
Mysuru: The SSLC results announced on Apr.30 had M. Meghana, a student of Sadvidya High School, smiling when it came to the marks in all the five subjects, except the one in Mathematics which made her drop her jaw. After all, she had scored 125/125 in Sanskrit, 98/100 in English, 99/100 in Kannada, 97/100 in Science and 99/100 in Social Studies. But it was in Mathematics that her joy turned to despair when she read 70/100.
A confident Meghana did not lose heart. She told her father V. Mohan, a building contractor and a resident of Vidyaranyapuram, that she was sure that she had not fared as badly as the marks reflected.
Speaking to Star of Mysore here this morning, Meghana said, “I was sure that I had done very well in Mathematics and hence, I convinced my father to apply for the photocopy of the answer sheet. We had to pay Rs.405 as fee. Though the fee is very steep, I still insisted that the totalling must be wrong and I will get more marks if we look at the answer sheet.”
When they saw the answer script and checked the total, it was found that 30 marks which had to be added to the total marks had been omitted.
True to the belief of Meghana, whose favourite subject is Mathematics, she had scored 100/100 when they totalled the marks.
The very next day, Mohan visited the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board Office in Malleswaram, Bengaluru and applied for re-totalling. Her total marks went up from 588 out 625 to 618/625 and now she stands third in her school because of the revised total.
Asked what her future plans were, Meghana said that she is planning to study PCMB (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology) in PUC and aims to do Aeronautical Engineering later.
