Be cautious before stopping vehicles at deserted places: Home Department
Bengaluru: Travellers have been urged to stay alert while driving on National and State Highways, whether using their own vehicles or hired private transport.
The Home Department has cautioned motorists against stopping in isolated stretches if approached by strangers, as incidents of robbery and extortion are steadily rising.
In the last three years, Karnataka has reported 403 such cases. On National Highways alone, 2023 saw 81 extortion and 23 robbery cases, followed by 66 extortion and 16 robbery cases in 2024.
Between January and November 15, 2025, 51 extortion and 14 robbery cases has already been recorded. State Highways have also witnessed troubling trends: 39 extortion and 17 robberies in 2023, 35 extortion and 22 robberies in 2024 and 20 extortion and 19 robberies so far in 2025.
Police admit that curbing highway robberies remains a major challenge, with repeated incidents causing deep public anxiety.
Enhanced night patrols
To counter the threat, check-posts are being set up along vulnerable stretches, where suspicious vehicles and individuals are screened. The Home Department has also supplied Police Stations with motorcycles fitted with sirens and red lights for enhanced night patrols.
Additionally, 112 Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) patrol units have been deployed across highways in three shifts to ensure round-the-clock vigilance.
Known offenders involved in past robberies and property crimes have been issued MOB (Modus Operandi Bureau) cards, enabling surprise checks and close monitoring of their movements. Border coordination meetings are underway, with information on suspects shared across neighbouring States, districts and Police stations.
Highway patrol vehicles are operating regularly and CCTV footages from toll plazas is periodically reviewed.
The Government has also strengthened community policing initiatives, encouraging neighbourhood vigilance to prevent crimes. Police personnel on night beat duty have been instructed to carry weapons and ammunition without fail.
Authorities emphasise that these measures aim to contain the growing menace of highway robberies and extortion and ensure safer travel for the public.
