Hon. Doctorate conferred on Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy

March 7, 2017

Only hard work and dedication will help artistes get recognition and laurels, said renowned violinist Dr. L. Subramaniam here this morning. He was delivering the Convocation address at the 2nd Annual Convocation of  Dr. Gangubai Hangal University for Music and Performing Arts held in city this morning.

Stating that Karnataka had contributed immensely to  Hindustani Music apart from Karnatak Music, Subramaniam remembered the contributions of Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Dr. Gangubai Hangal, Veene Sheshanna, Piteelu Chowdaiah and other maestros.

He also called upon students to take Indian music to people all over the world. Subramaniam also alleged that a few people, in an effort to get instant fame and recognition, were using the works of M.S. Subbalakshmi and posting them on their online channels. This is unethical  and at the same time violates copyright laws.

Prior to this, Chancellor of the University and Governor Vajubhai R. Vala presented Hon. Doctorate to Karnatak Classical    vocalist Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy, who retired as a professor from University of Mysore Fine Arts College.

However, other two dignitaries, N. Rajam and Enagi Balappa were not present to collect their Hon. Doctorates. Later, the University authorities announced that the honour would be presented to them in person.

In her address, Prof. Gowri Kuppuswamy advised the students to work hard to achieve success and fame. She also said that the students must bring laurels to the University.

A total of 47 students, including 30 female and 17 male students, received their degrees.  The University also presented 18 gold medals to 12 students, cash prizes to 3 students along with the ranks to 9 students.

In the faculty of vocal music, students won a total of 14 medals, 1 medal in faculty of instrumental music and 3 medals in faculty of dance.  A total of 30 students, 21 female and 9 male, graduated from faculty of vocal music (Karnatak and Hindustani), 7 students (all male) from faculty of instrumental music and 10 students (9 female and 1 male) from faculty of dance.

Music University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar, Registrar Prof. Niranjana, Syndicate Members Tulasi Ramachandra, Nanda Patil and Prashanth and others were present.

Syndicate members boycott convocation

As announced earlier, five members of Syndicate headed by C.R. Himamshu boycotted today’s convocation alleging that Dr. Sarvamangala Shankar had not utilised the funds released by the State Government for University’s development and also did not take up the construction of the University’s building on the 8-acre land allotted in Sathagalli in city. However, Music University officials refuted the allegations and added that they had not attended the convocation owing to prior engagements and that there was no misunderstanding with the VC.
