Bengaluru: The Governor and Vice-Chancellors of State Universities have taken a decision to confer Honorary Doctorates on only one person in each University.
This decision was taken as most of the times the conferring of Honorary Doctorates were mired in political controversies, said the sources in the Raj Bhavan.
A few of the Universities were recommending names of people who were unfit for the award. If the Universities recommend more than two names for the Honorary Doctorates, the Governor himself will take a decision to pick one, it is learnt. Recently, Visvesveraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, had nominated seven names for Honorary Doctorates. The Governor recommended just one name. One of the names recommended by VTU was of a controversial person from a real estate background. The Bengaluru University and University of Mysore have still not sent the list.
