Mysore/Mysuru: Days after the State Government made Kannada mandatory in 60 percent space of name-boards and signages, the Mysuru Hotel Owners Association has urged the Government to review its order and fix 50 percent space for Kannada in name-boards as in the past.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday, Association President C. Narayanagowda said that previously, the Kannada and Culture Department had directed the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to ensure 50 percent space for Kannada in name-boards of hotels, commercial establishments, companies and all other business establishments in areas coming under it.
But now, the State Government has modified its order, reserving 60 percent space for Kannada in name-boards. Highlighting the inconvenience caused to tourists from other States if Kannada space is more than 50 percent in name-boards, especially when Mysuru is considered as a top tourist destination of the State, Narayanagowda urged the Government to review its present order and fix 50 percent space for Kannada in name-boards.
Asserting that the hoteliers in no way are against Kannada, he said that the Association is pressing for 50 percent space for Kannada taking into consideration tourism development, with Mysuru being a top tourist destination, for both domestic and international tourists.
Reiterating that the Association will stand for the cause of Kannada when it comes to land, language and water issues, he said that the Association will always be supportive of the Government in such cases. But the Government should take note of Mysuru’s tourism development and fix 50 percent space for Kannada in name-boards as in the past, the letter stated.
