Huge boulder rolls onto Chamundi Hill Road

Mysuru: A huge boulder rolled down onto Uttanahalli Road leading to Chamundi Hill and landed in the middle of the road following heavy rain in Mysuru. The incident has raised concerns over the safety of motorists.

Mysuru district has been receiving continuous rain over the past few days, with Saturday’s downpour believed to have triggered the rockfall.

Thousands of devotees, tourists and residents visit Chamundi Hill every day, with traffic increasing on weekends and special occasions.

Falling rocks from the hill slopes pose a serious threat to motorists and pedestrians. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the latest incident.

Rockfalls and landslides have occurred on Chamundi Hill in the past, too. A major landslide a few years ago on the road leading to Nandi statue forced authorities to close the stretch for several years.

The latest incident on Uttanahalli Road has renewed concerns over the stability of the hill slopes and the safety of people travelling to and from the popular pilgrimage and  tourist destination.
