More than 450 children from 15 special schools in Mysuru took part in ‘Bhandhavya-2017’, a sports competition for special children, organised by Rotary Mysore Midtown, in association with Special Olympics Bharat, Karnataka (SOBK), at Oval Grounds in city this morning. The event was inaugurated by Sabitha Monis, a specially-abled achiever and Student Welfare Officer at Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodabidre in Dakshina Kannada by writing ‘All the Best’, on a white board holding the pen with her toes.
Rtn. Dr. R.S. Nagarjuna, District Governor, RI Dist. 3181, Rtn. K.B. Harish, President, Rotary Mysore Midtown, Rtn. A.N. Aiyanna, Hon. Secretary, Rtn. K. Umesh, Chairman, Bhandhavya-2017, Rtn. Raju Baliga, Community Service Director, Rtn. Vasanth Kumar Shetty, Area Director of SOBK and others were present.
Speaking after inaugurating the event, Sabitha said, “Special children are not a curse but a gift from God for a special reason. These kids have special strength, energy and intelligence which should be identified by their parents first and friends and teachers should encourage them.”

She said that though she has been deprived of hands since birth, she was looked after very well by her parents and was later encouraged by her teachers and friends which enabled her to write her exams using her toes and passing out with flying colours. She called upon all special kids to overcome their problems and show others that they can do anything what a normal person does.
Earlier, a colourful march-past was taken out by the special kids from special schools like Nireekshe, Mythri Charitable Trust, Karunamayi Foundation and All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) among other schools. The competitions were held in two categories — Higher Ability Children: 400 mts, 100 mts, 4×100 mts relay run and long jump; Lower Ability Children: 50 mts run and throw ball.
The valedictory of the event was scheduled to be held at 3 pm where Dr. P. Krishnaiah, Director (in-Charge), Dept. of Physical Education, University of Mysore, will be the chief guest. Rtn. K.G. Anantharaj Urs, Assistant Governor, Zone-7, RI Dist. 3181, will distribute prizes to the winners.
