Hunsur: The polling for electing a new body of Hunsur City Municipal Council (CMC) yesterday saw a voter turnout of 75.02 percent.
This was the first election to the CMC after Hunsur was upgraded from TMC (Town Municipal Council) to CMC.
The Hunsur CMC has 31 Wards. Out of the 41,995 eligible voters, 31,473, including 15,672 men, 15,800 women and 1 other voter cast their votes. The authorities had set up 39 polling booths across the town and polling was held amid tight security.
There are a total of 117 candidates in the fray for 31 Wards, which include 31 from Congress, 28 from JD(S), 22 from BJP, 3 from SDPI,1 from CPI(M) and 32 independents. The counting of votes will be taken up tomorrow (Feb.11) morning at the CMC building.
Centenarian dies after casting vote
Sunday’s polling was witness to a tragic incident as a centenarian woman died minutes after casting her ballot at a booth. Singamma (107) of Kalkunike, after exercising her franchise at a booth in Ward 3 in the morning, was returning home with her grand son Srinivas, when she collapsed and died, it is learnt. Incidentally, Singamma’s grand-daughter Geetha is contesting as an independent candidate from Ward 3.
