Mysore/Mysuru: Dr. T. Ravichandran, Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT, Kanpur, has advised students not to use informal language like emoticons while writing letters or emails.
He was speaking at a webinar on ‘Introduction to Communicative Skills’ organised by Division of Languages, Department of Water and Health – Faculty of Life Sciences (DWH-FLS), JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru, recently.
Dr. Ravichandran stressed that non-verbal aspects of communication like body language, attitude and tone of voice also play an important role in conveying message in the right manner. He also underscored the importance of punctuation while writing letters and emails, and how wrong punctuation could result in miscommunication.
In question and answer session, he gave tips to students on how to become good orators by overcoming stage fear and ways to improve knowledge by participating in debates and group discussion with friends.
Dr. Ravichandran asked students to register their names for the course on ‘Enhancing Soft Skills and Personality’ being offered by IIT Kanpur on the Swayam portal. This course would help further enhancement of communication skills, he added.
Dr. P.A. Kushalappa, Director, Academics, JSS AHER, spoke on the importance of communication skills at the academic and personal level in student life.
Dr. K.A. Raveesha, Head, DWH – FLS, stressed on the importance of effective communication not only while facing job interviews but also while pursuing their Master’s degree or Ph.D.
Mukta Sathisha, Assistant Professor and Coordinator for Division of Languages, DWH – FLS, welcomed. Aruna Kumari, Assistant Professor of English, Division of Languages, introduced the resource persons, according to a press release.
