Inauguration of Kitchen Waste Biogas Plant at NIE Boys Hostel

Mysuru: The Kitchen Waste Biogas Plant of capacity 50kg/day at NIE-Boys’ Hostel was inaugurated recently by MUDA Chairman D. Dhruvakumar and MLA M. K. Somashekar.

The inauguration was followed by a programme at NIE-Diamond Jubilee Sports Complex where Dhruvakumar and Somashekar addressed the gathering and highlighted the significance of waste management and rain water harvesting systems. They also appreciated NIE for its excellent positive contributions to the society for sustainable development.

Kitchen Waste Biogas Plant at NIE-Boys’ Hostel is a green initiative by NIE-CREST (Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies). The biogas plant converts 18 tons of kitchen waste per year to biogas, a renewable and sustainable energy source. The biogas plant serves the purpose of waste management within NIE-Boys’ Hostel. The biogas generated is being supplied to the Kitchen of Boys’ Hostel and the slurry obtained as a by-product is utilised for gardening. This is an important step towards waste management taken by NIE and is a model for other institutions to replicate the best practices in waste management towards achieving clean Mysuru and Swachh Bharat.

N. Ramanuja, Vice-President, NIE, presided. Hon. Secretary G.S. Ramachandra, Principal Dr. G. Ravi and S. Shamsundar, Head, NIE- CREST addressed the gathering on Solid Waste Management in the region. A memento was presented to K.N.Ramesh, Executive Engineer (Retd.), Public Works Department, also an alumnus of NIE.

Dr. G. Sarangapani, Chairman Hostel Committee, Dr. Mohan Ram, Warden, Boys Hostel, Dr. G. S. Suresh, Dean- Academic Affairs, Dr. N. Suresh, Professor and Head of Civil Engineering Department and Dr. T.N. Sridhar, Controller of Examination were present at the programme conducted by NIE-Hostel committee and NIE-CREST.
