Increasing debts: Four persons commit suicide

Mysuru: In separate incidents, a couple and two farmers have committed suicide following increasing debts.

In the first case, a couple, unable to repay the loans they had taken, committed suicide by hanging self at K. Shettalli, Maddur taluk in Mandya district.

The deceased are Manjunath (55) and his wife Indramma (45), both native of Yalandur in Chamarajanagar and were working as labourers. The couple had migrated from Yalandur and had settled in K. Shettalli about five years ago and were working as labourers at poultry farms and agricultural fields.

The couple had a bike loan and had also taken loans from private financiers. They were paying a daily interest of Rs. 500 and had even pledged their household articles, it is learnt. Due to pressure from financiers, they committed suicide yesterday by hanging selves at the farm house in which they were staying. They leave behind a son and a daughter. While their daughter is married, their son is staying at Yalandur. K.M. Doddi Police have registered a case in this regard.

In the second case, Ramakrishna (45), a resident of Madihalli village in Nagamangala taluk, ended his life by hanging self to a coconut tree in the nearby farm on Wednesday night.

Ramakrishna had taken Rs. 6 lakh agricultural loan from a bank to grow tomato, sugarcane, banana, maze and had also got three borewells sunk. As the crops failed and due to the borewells not yielding water, Ramakrishna, who had become depressed, committed suicide, when his family members were asleep. Bindiganavile Police have registered a case.

In the third case, Virupaksha (55), a resident of Yelemuddanahalli, who had taken Rs. 6.5 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh loans from two banks to grow tobacco in his 3.5 acre land, has committed suicide.
