India wins second Test against Bangladesh in a thriller

December 25, 2022

Dhaka: India beat Bangladesh by three wickets in the low-scoring second Test to complete a 2-0 series sweep at Mirpur today.

Chasing a paltry 145 runs for victory on a turning track, India overcame a top-order batting collapse to reach the target in the first session on the penultimate day at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Ravichandran Ashwin topscored for India with an unbeaten 42 while off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz  (5-63) was the pick of Bangladesh bowlers. Bangladesh had prevailed 2-1 in the preceding one-day international series between the neighbours.

India was chasing a small victory target of 145 after Bangla spinner Mehidy Hasan had struck triple blows on the third day on Saturday to keep alive Bangladesh’s hopes of a series-levelling victory in the dramatic second Test.

The tourists began the fourth day today on a precarious  note at 45-4, after 14 wickets tumbled on a frenetic day three — half of them in the final session alone.

Axar Patel, promoted to number four, was batting on 26 at stumps with night watchman Jaydev Unadkat on 3 at the other end yesterday.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 231 in their second innings largely because of Litton Das’ sparkling 73 before being all out in the final session, leaving the tourists India to chase 145 runs for victory.

India completed the task on the fourth day, losing seven wickets, three of them within an hour of play today. But, top order young batsman Shreyas Iyer, who scored an unbeaten 29 and the experienced Ravichandran, who scored a crucial innings (42 not out), held nerves and steered India to victory without any further loss of wickets.  The two batters shared a vital unbeaten stand of 71 runs  for the eighth wicket, which resulted in India, which had collapsed to 74/7 in the run chase, ultimately  romping home in a thriller.
