Inter-College Journalistic Meet at St. Philomena’s College

March 17, 2018

Mysuru:  An Inter-college Journalistic Meet and Script Writing Workshop ‘Aaina-2018’ for the academic year 2018-2019 was organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Philomena’s College auditorium recently.

The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest Prof. M. Krishne Gowda, former Principal of the College. Addressing the students of various colleges, he  said that the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication has an indispensible role in spreading the fame of the college across Karnataka and other States. He said “Aaina” had been conducted in the college for 11 years and has given students exceptional journalistic skills through workshops and competitions.

He emphasised on the role of journalists in the present society and said that the profession is significant in deciding what people should know in the information age. He added that the wisdom and knowledge are important.  Though technology has developed, we cannot assume that it is the end. The internet is a parallel universe. As far as a student is concerned, the requirement is wise decisions in life; money and fame follow the knowledge, he opined.

Today, there is a big gap between what is being taught in the educational institutions regarding Journalism and what is being practiced in the media industry. Every field of service becomes an industry where ethics and morals take the backseat. This is the time to think about our sense of responsibility and ethics, he said.

The script writing workshop, carried out by Akshay Siddharth, Faculty, Department of Journalism, helped students to learn the basic lessons of script writing. Students could learn new terms and terminologies related to film and screenplay through power points and visuals.
