Mysuru: Maharani’s Arts College, in association with State Educational Guidance and Reformation Committee (SEGRC), had organised an interaction on ‘Need for compulsory voting’ at the College premises here yesterday.
Inaugurating the programme, journalist Amshi Prasannakumar opined that voting was very important in democracy and regretted that compulsory voting was yet to be implemented.
He observed that the voting percentage was good in rural areas but poor in urban areas which should improve.
Department of Statistics Assistant Director Prakash, addressing the gathering, said that the Election Commission had come out with good programmes to create voter awareness but felt that compulsory voting should be enforced sometime for good results.
SEGRC Chairman Dr. Sudhakar Hosalli opined that the education system should also throw light on voting awareness.
He pointed out that women had succeeded in many fields but regretted that harassment of women had still continued in society.
College Principal C.H. Prakash, HoD of Political Science Mahadevaiah, SEGRC General Secretary Dr. Gurubasavaraj Pandit and others were present.
