International Meet on Genomic Instability and Cancer

Mysuru: A one-day International Meet on ‘Genomic Instability and Cancer,’ sponsored by the Company of Biologist, Cambridge, UK, was organised by the Department of Studies (DoS) in Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, PBMMEC Post Graduate wing of SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Metagalli, Mysuru,on Oct.26.

The International Meet was inaugurated by Dr. A.G. Rajeev, Radiation Oncologist & Medical Director, the Radiant Institute, Mysuru. The programme included four technical sessions by eminent speakers.

Dr. C. Sathees Raghavan, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, delivered a talk on the topic ‘Chromosomal translocation in cancer.’ The second technical session by Dr. P. Bharathi Salimath, Professor, DoS in Biotechnology, UoM, Manasagangothri, Mysuru,  catered to the topic ‘DNA Damage response & Genomic instability in Cancer.’

The third technical session was handled by Dr. M. Shylaja Dharmesh, Retd. Principal Scientist, Department of Biochemistry & Nutrition, CFTRI, Mysuru, on the topic ‘Can Diet modulate genomic Instability in Cancer’; and the fourth technical session was on ‘DNA damage response in hematopoietic  stem cells’  by  Dr. A.G. Mahadesh Prasad, SERB – Young Scientist, DoS in Biotechnology, Microbiology & Biochemistry, PBMMPG wing, Mysuru.

Sharing their knowledge and expertise, the speakers elaborated on Genomic instability being a distinctive feature and common cause for cancer formation.

They further emphasised on better understanding of molecular mechanisms of DNA damage response and DNA repair mechanism. The meeting aimed to discuss and understand the recent progress and identify the new prospects in the field of Genomic Instability and Cancer.

The International Meet received a huge response with 250 participants, research scholars, faculties of various Post-Graduate Colleges in Mysuru.
