Intl. Symposium on ‘Advanced Materials for Engineering Applications’ held

Mysuru  – The Department of Mechanical Engineering, NIE, had organised a two-day International Symposium on ‘Advanced Materials for Engineering Applications (ISAMEA-2017)’ at its premises in city recently.

The symposium, sponsored by TEQIP-II, provided a forum for knowledge sharing between bright academic minds and experienced professionals who could develop cutting edge technologies in relevant materials and engineering fields.

Dr. K.G. Satyanarayana, Visiting Scientist, EMBRAPA, Colombo (PR-Brazil), in his inaugural address, enlightened the gathering on advancements of materials that led to cutting-edge innovations, thereby revolutionalising the current lifestyle of humankind.

G.S. Ramachandra, Hon. Secretary, NIE, presided.

Dr. M.V. Achutha, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, welcomed. Dr. B. Suresha, Dean (R&D), shed light on the importance of the symposium. Dr. K. Pushpalatha, Professor, Department of Chemistry, proposed a vote of thanks.

Dr. T. Umashankar Patro from DIAT, Pune, Dr. Rajeev Jain from DRDO, Bengaluru, Dr. Anjana Jain from NAL, Bengaluru, Dr. K. Ramachandra from GTRE, Bengaluru, R.S. Rajkumar, Hon. Treasurer, NIE-MC and Dr. T. Ananthapadmanabha, Principal, NIE-IT, Mysuru, took part in various sessions.

Dr. Jayashree Bijwe, Reliance Chair Professor from IIT-Delhi, delivered the keynote address on ‘Polymers & Composites in Tribology with Special reference to Friction materials’, followed by invited talks by Dr. Anjana Jain on ‘Innovations with Smart Material’ and Dr.  Ramachandra on ‘Failure Mechanisms in Non-Aerofoil Surfaces and Blade-Root Joints of Gas-Turbine Aero-Engines’.

While Dr. Rajeev Jain spoke on ‘Advanced Material for Gas Turbine Aero Engine & Finite Element Modelling’, Dr. Rupesh Roshan updated on ‘Novel Tribological Materials in Engine Technology and Healthcare.’

The second day started with a technical talk on ‘Engineering Applications of Composite Materials’ by Dr. M. Balasubramanian, followed by technical sessions by Dr. K.G. Satyanarayana on ‘Developments in Nano Materials and their Composites’ and Dr. K. Venketaswarlu, Principal Scientist, NAL, Bengaluru on ‘Prototype of Know How Technologies on Advanced Aluminium Alloy  and Composites’.

The last technical session was addressed by Dr. T. Umashankar Patro, who shared his expertise on ‘Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube-Polymer Composites for EMI Shielding and Strain-Sensing Applications’.

The symposium concluded with the valedictory address by Dr. K. Venketaswarlu. In all, 63 research papers were presented and four best posters were awarded with certificate of appreciation and cash prizes.
