Madikeri/ Mysuru: After weeks of a drought-like situation in Kodagu, it is finally raining there. Monsoon that was playing truant since June midweek has finally picked up since the last three days.
Most parts of the district in northern and southern parts of the district have been receiving moderate to heavy showers, feeding the Cauvery catchment areas with the much-needed moisture for the parched Krishna Raja Sagar Dam in Mandya to fill. Farmers in Kodagu who had till now lost hopes of a good rainfall have now taken up sowing activities.
It started raining on July 17 and the rainfall has intensified since last night. The temple towns of Bhagamandala and Talacauvery has been cut off from the other parts as the Triveni Sangama (confluence of rivers Cauvery, Kannike and Sujyothi) in Bhagamandala – the downstream of Talacauvery where river Cauvery originates – has been completely submerged. The bathing ghat at the Sangam too has been submerged.
Severe landslides have been reported on the Madikeri-Bhagamandala Road near Ayyangeri, parts of Murnad, Bethri, Balamberi and Appangala, with reports of roads being blocked by the flowing rainwater. Electricity supply in Madikeri and Virajpet Taluks have been disrupted following tree falls at many places. Following heavy rain, the district administration has declared a day’s holiday for schools and colleges today.
Kakkatu River or Kakkattu Pole in full spate due to continuous rains in Kodagu. The river is located on the upper stretch of Barapole in South Kodagu.
Areas including Bhagamandala, Talacauvery, Tannimani, Napoklu, Emmemadu, Pollibetta, Nelaji, Virajpet, Heggala, Thora, Ramanagara, Somwarpet, Singathooru, Hodavada, Kushalnagar, Byrambada, Murnad, Halugunda, Kandangala, Perumbadi, Bittangala, Gonikoppal, Mooteri, Ponnampet, Hysodluru, Kutta, Srimangala, Balele and other surrounding areas received good rains.
According to statistics provided by the DC office Control Room in Madikeri, from yesterday 8 am to today 8 am, Madikeri recorded 69.4 mm, Napoklu 83.6 mm, Sampaje 121 mm, Bhagamandala 200.2 mm, Talacauvery 260 mm, Virajpet 28.4 mm, Hudikeri 109 mm, Ponnampet 58.3 mm, Ammathi 20.5 mm, Balele 48 mm, Somwarpet 62.6 mm, Shanivarasanthe 37 mm, Shanthalli 170 mm, Kodlipet 50.4 mm, Kushalnagar 11.9 mm and Suntikoppa received 51 mm rainfall.
Parts of South Kodagu including Kutta, Srimangala, Manathawadi, Balele, Hudikeri, Besagoor, Kanoor and Nittoor that form the catchment area for River Lakshmanatheertha that flows into the KRS Dam.
