MCC seeks comprehensive scientific and engineering study to enhance performance
Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has written to Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE)/JSS Science and Technology University, Mysuru, seeking a comprehensive scientific and engineering study of the existing Kesare Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and recommendations to improve its performance.
MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha told Star of Mysore this morning that she, along with a team of officials, visited the Kesare STP yesterday and reviewed its functioning.
The plant plays a crucial role in the city’s sanitation and public health infrastructure by treating waste water and preventing pollution, she said.
Considering the ageing infrastructure and the growing population and waste water generation, MCC is exploring measures including the adoption of modern technology and expansion of the treatment capacity.
“The inspection and review focused on assessing the plant’s capacity, managing potential overflows and planning the necessary infrastructure upgrades to prevent any contaminated water from entering the Cauvery River,” she said.
“Recently, a meeting was chaired by Regional Commissioner Nitesh Patil, who is also the MCC Administrator and Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy. The inspection was a precautionary measure and was not prompted by any public complaints. The objective was to upgrade the existing facilities and ensure strict compliance with environmental standards,” she said.
Retrofitting, modernisation
“MCC is planning to invite an Expression of Interest (EOI) from experienced technology providers for retrofitting, modernisation and suitable technological improvements to existing STP system,” Savitha said.
As part of the proposed measures, suitable trees will be planted and the compound boundary and green buffer zone around the STP will be developed or improved to protect the facility and minimise its impact on surrounding areas.
Works are also proposed under the National Green Tribunal (NGT) programme to provide the identified missing sewer links and improve the conveyance of sewage to the treatment plant, she said.
SBR technology on cards
MCC is also preparing a proposal to the Government for comprehensive upgradation of the Kesare STP using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) technology. The technology is expected to improve treatment efficiency and ensure better quality of treated waste water.
The initiatives are aimed at improving the operational efficiency of the STP, strengthening environmental compliance, improving the quality of treated water and minimising inconvenience to residents of surrounding localities, the MCC Commissioner said.
MCC Executive Engineer Deepak, Assistant Executive Engineer (Environment) Madhukar, Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil) Srinivas, Environmental Engineer Naveen and other Assistant Engineers accompanied the MCC Commissioner.
