Knowledge about GST is still in nascent stage: UoM Professor

Workshop on GST and Customs Duty held

Mysuru: “The  concept of GST is not new to the world. It is an age-old concept adopted by 160 countries. France was the first country to implement it,” said Dr. Rajashekar, Professor of Commerce and Co-ordinator (K-SET), University of Mysore (UoM).

He was speaking at the inauguration of a one-day workshop on GST and Customs Duty organised by Department of Commerce, SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Jayalakshmipuram, in association with Mysore University Commerce and Management Teachers’ Forum, under UGC /CPE grants.

The workshop was organised keeping in mind the inclusion of GST in the Commerce curriculum to facilitate real time knowledge for students and teachers.

Addressing the participants, Dr. Rajashekar said ‘GST is a strong concept: the problem is at the implementation stage as the existing system is not co-operating.’ He was of the opinion though GST was implemented after a lot of discussion, it will take another 2 to 3 years to make a complete study and to take a final shape.

Further, he added that since the 1990s, the country has been witnessing a lot of economic reforms and the GST is in the same line. He emphasised that it is the need of the hour.

R. Vasudeva Murthy, President, Mahajana Education Society, presided. Dr. G. H. Mahadeva Swamy, President, Mysore University Commerce and Management Teachers’ Forum, Dr. B. S. Yogesh, Secretary, Mysore University Commerce and Management Teachers’ Forum, Dr. S. R. Ramesh, CEO, Academic Advisor and Dr. S Venkataramu, Principal, were on the dais. Chartered Accountant Vageesh Hegde was present. Nandini Muttur, faculty, briefed about the objectives of the workshop.  Rashmi Urs, Head, Department of Commerce, welcomed. Reshma, faculty, compered. Faculty members from the Department of Commerce across the University of Mysore participated in the workshop which had technical sessions on Input Tax Credit, Customs Act 1962 and Registration and Returns under GST.
