Lecture on ‘Healthy Heart’

Mysuru: The Institution of Engineers (India) Mysore Local Centre had organised a talk on ‘Healthy heart for all’ at S.P. Bhatt Hall in the Institution premises on JLB Road in city recently.

Dr. Adithya Udupa, Cardiologist, Champakamala, Chief-Diet and Nutrition, Janhavi Acharya, Physiotherapist from Apollo Hospitals, were the guest speakers.

The talk was aimed at creating awareness on Health and How Fit is your Heart.

Dr. Adithya Udupa said, Top 10 risk factors for disease are: House hold air pollution from Solid fuels, Smoking/Second Hand Smoking, High Blood Pressure, Childhood underweight, Low Fruit Intake,  Pollution, High Plasma Glucose, Alcohol use, Iron Deficiency and Sub-optimal Breast Feeding.

And also he said, by doing regular physical activity, supported by healthy diet and sleep, overtime you will be able to maintain a lean body, stress free mind, positive attitude at work, which all contributes to healthy heart by reducing the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol in blood, diabetes and also decreased involvement in smoking and alcohol.

Champakamala, Chief-Diet and Nutrition, said, healthy dietary practices are the corner stone of good health. Food habits have a big impact on heart’s health and one of the modifiable risk factors on heart health. Everybody needs the same nutrients throughout life but in varying amounts depending on age, gender, activity and health condition.

She said, daily exercise increases energy expenditure, improves blood circulation and relieves tension, decreases blood glucose, blood pressure and blood lipids, increases HDL and reduces tendency of clot formation.

Janhavi Acharya, Physiotherapist, said: Exercise, particularly aerobic conditioning and strength training is one of the key interventions that can prevent death and disability from cardiovascular disease. The most prevalent cardiovascular diseases include coronary heart disease (example – heart attack) and cerebro-vascular disease (example – stroke).

She said: Key factors for reducing CVD risks are diet and nutrition, physical activity, reducing smoking habits and cardiology support.

After the presentation, the   speakers were felicitated. IEI Chairman M. Chinnaswamy and Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) Project Engineer and IEI Executive Committee Member D.K. Dinesh Kumar were present.
