Lecture on body donation tomorrow

Mysuru:  Rotary Ivory City has organised a lecture on body donation by Dr. N.M. Shama Sundar on Aug.18 at M.S. Subbalakshmi Hall, Mahajana High School, Jayalakshmipuram at 7 pm.

Profile: Dr. Nonavinakere Mannar Shama Sundar, Professor of Anatomy, JSS Medical College, Mysuru, was formerly Dean, Faculty of Bio-Medical Sciences, JSS University, Mysuru.

A recipient of Government of India National Merit Scholarship, he has been working in the Department of Anatomy, JSS Medical College for the last 33 and as Head for 16 years. He is a Family Physician and is a practicing Paediatric Surgeon.

He has conducted more than 5,000 operations almost free taking only medicine charges to poor and needy people in the last 33 years. His general practice costs patients only 10 rupees including Medicines. He is popularly known as “Ten Rupee Doctor.”

He has started the JSS Body Donation Association in the JSS Medical College 23 years ago and has a record registration of almost 3,000 people for donation of their bodies and more than 363 bodies already donated — highest number in India. His family has donated the bodies of his mother and sister to the Medical College and have been Plastinated.

He has received several Awards and Distinctions including Karnataka Chapter of Anatomists “Gold Medal” for Depression Research; “Pride of Mysore” Award by Pragathi Pratisthan; “Samaja Seva Rathna” award by Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Mandya; “Vaidya Rathna” award by Mysore Clinical Society and  “Life Time Achievement” Award by Karnataka Samskruthika Parishat.
