Like in Assam, theatre artistes in State should get better remuneration: Rangayana Director

Rangayana Director Bhagirathi Bai Kadam being felicitated during ‘Ranga Sanje’ programme organised under the aegis of District Kannada Sahitya Parishat and Kadamba Ranga Vedike at Parishat premises, Palace North Gate, on Saturday. Mysuru: “Artistes associated with mobile theatre in Assam are getting a very good remuneration which should be replicated in Karnataka also,” opined Rangayana Director Bhagirathi Bai Kadam.

She was speaking at a programme ‘Ranga Sanje’ organised by Kadamba Ranga Vedike in association with Kannada Sahitya Parishat at its premises near Palace North Gate here on Saturday.

Bhagirathi Bai said that every day in Assam three types of theatre activities go on. The Government-funded theatre and amateur theatre have not gained importance but the mobile theatre has become very popular where artistes are paid an yearly remuneration of Rs. 50 lakh to Rs. 60 lakh which will be commensurate to their talent. She added that about 80 to 100 artistes perform in mobile theatre who would be sent to other States also on demand for performance and their remuneration would be contracted with the owner of the company.

Unwinding her nostalgia, Bhagirathi Bai said that she was born and brought up in Karnataka but spent most of her time in Assam. She further said that after getting trained at Ninasam in Shivamogga she got married to a person from Assam who incidentally too was a theatre artiste. She added that the two of them have with their troupe staged plays at various places in the country. She assured to strive to take Rangayana to greater heights with the co-operation of senior artistes and littérateurs.

On the occasion, the new Rangayana Director Bhagirathi Bai Kadam was felicitated by the organisers.
