Mysore/Mysuru: Lions Clubs International (District 317A), Region VII, had organised a Regional Conference at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall here yesterday.
Ln. K.N. Devaprasad inaugurated the conference.
Chief guest, former University of Mysore VC Prof. K.S. Rangappa spoke on the theme of the conference — ‘Higher Education – Challenges and Opportunities.’
“Every stage of education is important, but primary and higher education is very important for a developing country like India. Higher education provides specialised knowledge and skilled persons for national development. Because of priority given to higher education, developed countries have prospered well and brought out talented youngsters into the limelight. We need to pursue the same goal, in particular in our rural region. About 70 percent of Noble laureates are from rural background. Our Universities, together with private sector, should work towards this goal. Service oriented organisations like Lions Club should also focus on rural areas and conduct programmes to promote education, in particular higher education in those areas,” he said.
