Mysore/Mysuru: In a boost to women’s cricket, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is all set to announce its first edition of KSCA Maharani Trophy starting from Aug. 4.
The matches will be played at Alur Grounds in Benglauru and the finals will be played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Aug. 10, a day before the commencement of 4th edition of KSCA Maharaja Trophy.
Like the Maharaja Trophy, women’s trophy will have five franchises taking part — Mysore Warriors, Hubli Tigers, Shivamogga Lions, Mangaluru Dragons and Bengaluru Blasters. However, Gulbarga Mystics, who are one of the franchises of Maharaja Trophy, will not be a part of Maharani Trophy.
The players’ auction for KSCA Maharani Trophy will likely be held at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on July 29.
Speaking to Star of Mysore, Arjun Ranga, Managing Director, Cycle Pure Agarbathi and Owner of Mysore Warriors, said, “It is a fantastic initiative taken by the Karnataka State Cricket Association to encourage women’s cricket in the State. With Women’s Premier League (WPL) becoming one of the premier tournaments in the world cricket, tournaments like the Maharani Trophy would encourage more and more women cricketers to showcase their talent.”
In the recent years, women cricketers from Karnataka have been flourishing with players like Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Shreyanka Patil, Shubha Satheesh, Veda Krishnamurthy, Vellaswamy Vanitha and Karuna Jain, who have represented the Indian Women’s team.
The Maharani Trophy will be a boost for budding women cricketers like Liyanka Shetty and Nesara Sapthagirish, who have been doing well at the State-level to further showcase their talent.
“The game of cricket has to flourish from both the sides — men and women. We have good talent pool of women cricketers in the State who have been performing well. They are hard-working and aspire to flourish at the international-level. It is our duty to encourage them and provide them with a platform to showcase their skills,” said KSCA President K. Raghuram Bhat.
“Tournaments like these provide good exposure for youngsters like us, who want to play more matches. Earlier, we had very few matches to perform, but now the Maharani Trophy will definitely boost women’s cricket further in the State,” said Nesara Sapthagirish, Captain, State U-15 Women’s Team.
