Man gets 7-year jail term for abetting wife’s suicide

Mysuru: A City Court has sentenced a man to 7 years imprisonment for abetting the suicide of his wife.

Shivakumar alias Shivu of Yeraganahalli in city is the one who has been sentenced.

Shivakumar had married Sowmya in 2018, during which he had received dowry. But some months after marriage, Shivakumar started physically and mentally harassing his wife for bringing more dowry.

Unable to bear the torture, Sowmya committed suicide by hanging herself at her husband’s home on June 30, 2019.

The then Devaraja ACP G.S. Gajendra Prasad had submitted a charge sheet to the Court against Shivakumar.

The Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court Judge P.J. Somashekar, who heard the case, held accused Shivakumar guilty of the charges and sentenced him to 7 years imprisonment and also imposed a penalty of Rs.50,000. Public Prosecutor A.N. Madhu argued on behalf of the Government.
