Man killed as heavy marble slabs come crashing down

A worker, who was shifting heavy-weight marble slabs, died in city yesterday evening as marble slabs fell on him while they were being unloaded from a truck. He died on the spot due to severe bleeding as the slabs fell on his head. The incident occurred at Lakshmipuram at the godown of Rajasthan Marbles near Nanjumalige.

The victim has been identified as 26-year-old K.P. Girish, a resident of Chikkanandi (Chamalli) at Hampapura Hobli in H.D. Kote Taluk. Girish, along with other workers, was unloading the marble slabs that were brought in a truck from Rajasthan. As the slabs were wide and heavy, at least four to five were engaged in the unloading operation.

As they were unloading the slabs, the A-shaped stand that is erected on the ground to support the heavy slabs broke and in the process the slabs slipped and crashed on Girish. The victim who was caught in the middle of the slabs could not escape. Though workers tried to lift the slabs, Girish bled to death as his head was severely injured.

Girish was working at the Rajasthan Marbles since over eight years and he has two twin daughters. He used to commute between Mysuru and H.D. Kote and was the sole breadwinner for his family. Hearing the news, his wife, relatives and villagers rushed to city and were inconsolable. They kept the dead body in front of the shop and demanded compensation from the shop owners and they refused to move till the money is paid.

MLA M.K. Somashekar visited the spot and assured the victim’s family that the owners will pay the compensation. Later, Girish’s body was taken for cremation.

Lakshmipuram Police have registered a case against the shop owner and the truck owner for not taking enough precautions while unloading the marble slabs.
