Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murder

Mysuru: First Additional District and Sessions Court Judge Ashwini V. Shiriyanna has awarded life imprisonment to a man for killing an elderly woman besides snatching her gold ornaments.

The man who was sentenced is Srinivas alias Girish, resident of Belavatha Manti here while the victim is Jayamma(60), a money lender

Srinivas was an auto driver by profession. He was taken a loan of Rs 1.5 lakh from Jayamma, resident of Hudco colony near Bannimantap. Srinivas was doing pick and drop service to Jayamma in his auto rickshaw besides helping her in money lending business. Believing that he can save the money given by Jayamma , he hatched a conspiracy to kill her on the night of Feb. 10, 2013.

Under the pretext of recovering the loan amount from one Majju, he picked Jayamma in his autorickshaw and killed her after hitting her head with a wooden stick near the Ring Road  at about 10 pm and had made away with her gold chain and gold bangles she was wearing. He had dumped her body in a ditch on the roadside before fleeing from the spot.

The very next day, Srinivas pledged her gold ornaments for Rs. 82,000  at a shop in Belavatta. The then Metagalli Police Inspector Vivekananda who investigated the case, arrested the Srinivas, recovered the gold ornaments pledged by him  and submitted a charge sheet to the Court. Judge Ashwini after hearing the arguments found Srinivas guilty of the crime and awarded life imprisonment.

Public Prosecutor Ajithkumar D. Hammigi argued for the government.
