Manual scavenging and death of a Pourakarmika in manhole: MCC seals Kalpana Lodge for failing to remit compensation money

Mysuru: The authorities of Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) yesterday sealed Kalpana Lodge near Jaganmohan Palace for not remitting the compensation money paid by the MCC to the family of the deceased Pourakarmika who had died of suffocation, while cleaning the manhole manually.

In 2014, the Management of Kalpana Lodge had summoned Kumar, a Pourakarmika, to clean the manhole manually and when Kumar got down into the manhole to clean it, he was suffocated to death. As the Management of Kalpana Lodge failed to provide compensation to the family of deceased Kumar, the UGD division of the MCC had provided Rs.10 lakh as compensation to Kumar’s family and had issued notices to the owner of Kalpana Lodge to remit the compensation amount it had paid.

As the owner did not remit the compensation amount since four years, the MCC had issued a final notice on November last. As the owner of the lodge did not heed to the final notice too, MCC officials led by MCC Zone 9 Assistant Commissioner Veena, yesterday sealed the lodge.

MCC Executive Engineer (UGD) Jadav, AEE Shivannegowda, Engineer Manjunath and others were present.
