Mysore/Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) tax system is flawed and even the present attempts to bring in an online system of tax payment is full of loopholes, alleged Akhila Bharathiya Grahak Panchayat Member G.L. Nagaraj.
In a press release, he said that there is neither a comprehensive guidelines nor a taxation policy with the MCC and taxes are being levied in haphazard way leading to minimal revenue generation. The flawed tax system is also leading to increased taxes where people end up paying more than the fixed amount.
There is huge disparity in taxes where one person having a particular type of building pays higher than another person who has the same dimension building in a different locality, he said. He alleged that the Self-Assessment System of tax payment has not been computerised.
“There are different tax slabs of buildings and residences on different areas though the dimensions are the same. Residents are being misguided by officers who have no knowledge about online system and this flawed system will lead to more confusion and residents will end up paying more than required,” he added.
Taking exception to the MCC’s plan to introduce QR code-based payment system, Nagaraj said that instead of bringing in a new system with no actual plan, the MCC could have adopted more authentic and reliable UPOR (Urban Property Ownership Record) system that is already in place.
