Parks opposite two schools at Rajivnagar to get 30,000 saplings
Mysuru: To boost biodiversity, reduce sweltering heat and control air pollution, Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has plans to develop two more parks using the Japanese-based Miyawaki method.
The Miyawaki method, which envisages the development of mini forests in urban landscapes, has already been adopted by MCC at its three parks — in Vijayanagar 3rd Stage, Jodi Bevina Mara Park at Dattagalli and Saalumarada Thimmakka Tree Park at Jayanagar — under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Now, two more parks at Rajivnagar — one located opposite Rose Montessori School and another in front of Shine International School — have been identified to be developed under the Miyawaki method, in coordination with Toyota Kirloskar Autoparts Private Ltd.
Under this method, 15,000 saplings will be planted on a one-acre plot of both the parks, totalling 30,000 saplings.
The saplings include Baage (Siris), Jackfruit, Neem, Shista (Indian Rosewood), Nellikai (Gooseberry), Belada Hannu (Wood Apple), Aala (Big Banyan), Hunase (Tamarind), Shalmali (Cotton Tree), Silver Oak, Honda (Elephant Apple), Hole Honne (Kino), Nerale (Jamun), Mahagany, Teak, Haale (Blackboard), Honge (Beech Tree), Tabebuia, Ramphal (Custard Apple), Ashoka, Taale (Palm), Kasina Flower (Golden Shower Tree), Ashwatha (Fig), Athi (Cluster Fig), Nandi Battalu (Crape Jasmine), Mango, Hebbevu (Melia Dubia), Sandalwood, Apple, Simarouba (Paradise Tree), Banni, Ambe Huli (Monkey Jack), Sampige (Champak), Bombu (Bamboo), Thomalai Flower and Navilu Hoovu (Cannonball Tree).
Under CSR, the company sponsoring the project will handle the maintenance for a period of three years. MCC will provide basic amenities such as water and electricity, along with deputing a security guard for the parks. The parks are being readied to implement the project, while further works are on to facilitate an agreement between MCC and Toyota Kirloskar.
The indigenous plant species with robust growth will be planted in close rows so that, upon growth, the whole area looks like a dense forest. It will enhance the greenery, thus contributing to the visual appearance of the city, said MCC Assistant Engineer (Horticulture) H.N. Chethan, speaking to Star of Mysore.
We are developing parks using the Japanese-based Miyawaki method in partnership with private companies. While 3 parks have already been developed under the Miyawaki method, two more parks will be developed on similar lines. The initiative is getting good response from the public as well.
