Mysuru: Opposition to the State Government’s proposal to hold Kambala, the traditional buffalo race of coastal Karnataka, during this year’s Mysuru Dasara celebrations, is gathering momentum, with several civic groups, environmental activists and farmers’ organisations raising concerns over the move.
Critics contend that Dasara, recognised as Karnataka’s Nada Habba (State Festival), is deeply rooted in Mysuru’s history, heritage and cultural identity. They argue that introducing events not traditionally associated with the region could dilute the festival’s unique character.
Environmental concerns have also been raised, with opponents alleging that the proposed venue could lead to tree felling and other ecological damage. They have also questioned the expenditure of crores of rupees to create infrastructure for an event expected to attract lakhs of spectators.
In a press release, Parashuramegowda, General Secretary of Parisarakkagi Naavu, announced that a public meeting will be held on Thursday (July 2) at 3.30 pm at Jaladarshini Guest House to discuss the issue.
The meeting will be attended by farmers’ leader Badagalapura Nagendra, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) S.G. Vombatkere, Dr. Ramakrishnappa of Belavala Foundation and heritage expert Prof. N.S. Rangaraju and leaders of progressive and Kannada organisations, including Ugranarasimha Gowda.
The organisers have appealed to citizens to participate in large numbers, saying that the meeting aims to discuss measures to protect Mysuru’s environment, heritage and the cultural identity of the Dasara festival.
