MGP meeting on Sept. 14

September 12, 2025

To launch Mysuru Tree Census Project

Mysore/Mysuru: Like Bengaluru, Mysuru is marching fast to become a concrete jungle. The massacre of 40 fully grown trees on April 13 on Hyder Ali Road in Nazarbad should be a recent reminder of such efforts by our authorities charged with the responsibility of promoting sustainable living.

Needless to state the obvious that it is trees which are an absolute necessity to maintain a healthy, green and spiritual life style not only for human beings but also for all other species.

To contribute towards this critical need, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) is launching a first-of-its-kind Mysuru Tree Census Project on Sept. 14.

Nitte University has completed such a project in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Smitha Hegde.

Dr. Hegde, now with the Centre for Advanced Learning, an educational institution in Mangaluru, has joined the efforts of MGP to undertake such a tree census in Mysuru. Students from Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering (VVCE) led by Prof. R. Karthik and JSS Pharmacy College led by Dr. T. M. Pramod Kumar, Dean, will be participating as volunteers to conduct surveys.

Data will be collected on locations, species, age, condition (electrical wires, concrete, tree guards etc) for all 65 Wards of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).

At the meeting to be held on Sunday (Sept. 14) at MGP Office, 6/1, Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, at 4 pm, Dr. Smitha Hegde and Sanjay Dattatri, an expert in Software (who is spearheading the project for MGP) will lead the discussion on tree census project. A formal MoU will be signed by the representatives of the participating institutions on the occasion. For details contact MGP on                           Ph: 0821-2515150.
