‘Microbiology is one of the fastest moving disciplines in Life Sciences’

Natl. symposium on ‘Trends in Microbiology’

Mysuru: A day-long National Symposium on ‘Trends in Microbiology’ was organised by the Department of Studies in Microbiology, University of Mysore (UoM), at Rani Bahadur auditorium on Hunsur Road here yesterday. The event was sponsored by University with Potential for Excellence, UoM.

Speaking after inaugurating the symposium, Prof. S.R. Niranjana, Vice-Chancellor, Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi, said that Microbiology is at present one of the fastest moving disciplines in Life Sciences.

Pointing out that it was high time to introspect the future career of students, with our Universities producing hundreds of Graduates and Post-Graduates every year, Prof. Niranjana said that it was important to ensure that the benefits of research done in the Universities reaches even the last person.

Regretting the migration of top-ranking students to foreign countries, he said that the Government should make all efforts to retain the best and most talented minds.  Highlighting the need for most appropriate use of Research Funds, he said that the results of the research must be used for addressing the problems that the world is facing today.

Noting that recent international developments are a major factor in renewed interest in Microbiology among students and researchers, Prof. Niranjana said that the symposium provides a multi-disciplinary forum for the discussion of all aspects of microbiology.

Prof. P.N. Rangarajan of the Department of Bio-Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, delivered the keynote address.

Vignyan Bhavan (UoM) Chief Co-ordinator Dr. G. Hemantha Kumar, Department Chairperson Dr. Shubha Gopal, Conveners Prof. V. Ravishankar Rai and Dr. N. Lakshmi Devi, Secretary Dr. S. Satish and Dr. M.Y. Sreenivasa and others were present.
