MLA asks Medar Block slum dwellers to move out

Mysuru: Chamaraja MLA L. Nagendra has urged slum dwellers of Medar Block to relocate in the wake of rains that has been lashing the city for the past few days.

Nagendra, who inspected slums at Medar Block along with officials yesterday, said that four houses in the slum have collapsed due to incessant rainfall, while several other houses have turned dilapidated.

Asking the residents to move to houses built under JnNURM scheme at Ekalavyanagar, Nagendra said that a railway line passes close to the houses and there is every chance that the earth may cave in.

Pointing out that 192 houses have been built in Ekalvayanagar, he reiterated that Medar Block slum dwellers must move to these houses in order to ensure their own safety.

Nagendra further said that Medar Block slum dwellers, who are willing to shift to Ekalavyanagar, will be allotted houses through lottery on Sunday (Aug.11), in the presence of MP Pratap Simha, DC Abhiram G. Sankar and other officials. Even as Nagendra asked the slum dwellers to move out, some slum dwellers expressed their unwillingness to relocate saying that they were sending their children to nearby schools and they were happy staying at Medar Block.

Claiming that most of the JnNURM houses built in Ekalavyanagar lacked ventilation and civic amenities, they appealed the MLA and other officials to improve the civic amenities in Medar Block slums.

Corporator Guru Vinayak, officials Kapni Gowda, Rangappa, Sunil and Nagaraj, local leaders Chikkavenkat, Shanmugam, Murgesh, Eranna, Mahesh and other officials were present.
