MLA takes doc to task for delay in autopsy

A 40-year-old man had died under mysterious circumstances following assault in H.D. Kote

H.D. Kote: MLA Anil Chikkamadu took the doctor of General Hospital in the town to task for showing negligence towards conducting the post-mortem of a murder victim on Wednesday.

Nagesh (40), son of Karigowda, Hirehalli B. Colony in the taluk, allegedly died under mysterious circumstances and his body had been kept at the mortuary of General Hospital here for post-mortem. The body had been shifted to mortuary at around 12 noon, but Anesthesiologist Dr. Kiran Kumar, who was on duty, was buying time to conduct the autopsy, citing work at emergency unit. He even refused to perform autopsy, showing a scant concern towards the repeated pleas of Police and relatives of the deceased.

The irked relatives also vented their anguish against the doctor, which came to the notice of MLA Anil Chikkamadu. The MLA, who rushed to the hospital, gave a patient hearing to the grouse of the relatives of the deceased. He also kept on waiting to hear the doctor’s version, but the latter didn’t turn up.

It was only after the MLA directed the hospital staff to inform the doctor about his arrival, the doctor came to him only to clarify that he was busy in work at emergency unit.

However, the MLA, who was in no mood to listen to doctor’s version, said: “Even though it’s half-an-hour since I came here, you didn’t even show courtesy to meet me. If you are not happy to work in the taluk, better you take transfer elsewhere.”

As the MLA asked him (doctor) about the delay in conducting autopsy, the doctor clarified that “It is a case of unnatural death but caused due to cardiac related problem as informed by the Police. The doctors pertaining to cardiology should conduct the post-mortem.”

The MLA, who was still not satisfied with the reply of doctor said: “You could have at least told the relatives of the deceased about the legal hurdles,” to which the doctor had no answer.

“Being a duty doctor, you have failed to provide correct information and hence will recommend the Government for your suspension,” the MLA told doctor before leaving the hospital.

The incident: Earlier in the morning, Nagesh and Puttegowda, son of Nagegowda of the same the village, quarrelled over a financial dispute. Puttegowda, who lost his cool, punched Nagesh on his chest who collapsed soon after the assault and died, as informed by latter’s relatives to Antarasanthe Police. Following the incident, Police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to General Hospital in the town for post-mortem.

Following a complaint by deceased person’s daughter, Police registered a case facilitating the post-mortem by Dr. Somanna, Medical Officer of General Hospital. The body was handed over to the relatives later.
