A Model United Nations Conference on ‘Tackling Climate Change and Sustainable Development’ was organised by the Department of Environmental Science, St. Philomena’s College, in collaboration with Qudrath and Madhura Mohan, law students of JSS Law College, at St. Philos auditorium.
Major General (retd.) S.G. Vombatkare, in his inaugural address, said that the aim of this programme is to give faith in dialogue. He added that dialogue and agreement are always better than argument and conflict.
He said, “Climate change can be tackled through adaptation and mitigation. Commenting on the increasing global warming which is the biggest cause of climate change, he said that human geints are using the earth as a source and also as a sink to dump the waste.
He expressed his concern about excessive use of resources and not replenishing it. He concluded by quoting the words of Einstein: “We cannot solve the problems with the same level of thinking that created them.”
Prof. K.S. Suresh, Principal of JSS Law College, Mysuru, who was the chief guest, spoke about the history of adopting UN models in Indian schools since 1996. He expressed his strong belief in the efficacy of UN and its effect on International law. He opined that debate brings peace in the world.
Commenting on sustainable development, he said: “We can take anything from the Earth but we should let the earth replenish it.” He opined that more than the outcome of the deliberations in the model conference, the process of participation is important.
Rev. Fr. Leslie Moras, Rector of the College congratulated the organisers for the initiative they have taken in organising the Model UN Conference and said it would help students learn the art of collecting information, doing some research on the data and learn the art of debating.
Dr. Ruth Shanthakumari, College Principal, spoke about the criteria adopted in measuring development.
The inaugural function was followed by the discussion among 55 delegates representing different countries. This discussion was followed by adopting resolutions.
Prof. P.K. Mary, HoD of Environmental Science, Dr. Sukanya, HoD, Mass Communication and Journalism, faculty and students from different Departments were also present.
