This has reference to the news item ‘Introduce Artificial Intelligence in Schools and Colleges’ (SOM dated Mar.24), a suggestion given by Prof. Sargur N. Srihari. His opinion was that ‘New kinds of work force would emerge in the market, hence there is an urgent need to introduce AI in Schools and Colleges in India to prepare future generations to face the challenges.’
In this direction, the CBSE has taken the right step as reported in The Hindu dated Mar. 24, 2019 (see pic.). The Board states that, this is done “TO ENHANCE THE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH in teaching learning and also sensitise the new generation.” I appreciate the plan by CBSE of introducing AI as an optional (6th) subject, with a declared incentive.
That is “in case a student fails in any one of the three elective subjects (Science, Maths and Social Sciences), then it will be replaced by the skill subject, offered as a sixth subject and the result of class X will be computed based on best five subjects.” A definite advantage even to an average student. Prof. Srihari’s suggestion is not only appropriate but right on time.
This is the need of the day in school curriculum, because AI uses different fields like Computer Science, Maths, Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience and Philosophy in its various manifestations. What is already a fact is the use of cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence, social intelligence, and very importantly ‘DECISION MAKING’ using all these skills. Very simply AI is an area of Computer Science that emphasises the creation of intelligent machines which can think and work like humans. The tools used are ‘sight, sound and touch’ which will allow an interaction, conversation and communication, as natural as between two human beings.
AI is effectively used in Space exploration, Mining, Smartphones, Fraud detection to name some. May be, as always with the advance of technology we face challenges that are concerned with Finance, Labour ( unemployment) and, of course, moral and ethical. You can’t blame Science for your greed and insensitivity. So discretion, kindness, love and forgiveness will always be in demand, but SHOULD be in command.
