More on illegal number plates

December 24, 2019

Sir,

Kudos to the Transport Department for their initiative to curb  illegal, illegible, flamboyant and fancy registration number plates apropos  “Remove illegal number plates in a week, motorists warned” appearing in Star of Mysore dated Dec.22.

It is high time the motorists  wilfully violating the MV Act (Rule 50, 51 of MV Act, 1989) which clearly stipulates the size of the front and rear letters and  numerals with the dimension  and location of both the number plates, based on the class of the vehicles, are punished.  This MV Act  emphasises that  fancy lettering is not permitted.  The rule also states  that  other names, pictures, art-work should not be displayed on the number plate.

It should be made  mandatory for the  units supplying the registration number plates  to the vehicle owners to display a board to educate the motorists about the size and font as per the MV Act in their premises.  Also they  should deter from supplying the registration number plates violating the rules under this Act.  This can definitely help in reducing the number of wrong types  of registration number plates.

When a vehicle without an easily readable number plate is involved  in an accident,  it will be difficult for the bye-standers to note down the registration number of the accident causing vehicle and such riders will escape from  the clutches of law.

Though we have all rules and regulations framed to inculcate traffic discipline, there is a visible lacuna in implementing the rules   owing to the lackadaisical approach by the authorities concerned. Hope the initiative by the Transport Department  to curb illegal, illegible, flamboyant and fancy registration  number plate will be a success.
