Personalities feted at two-day Indian Musicology Day

Mysore/Mysuru: Noted Veena Maestro Dr. R. Visweswaran said that Music and Musicology needs more recognition.

He was speaking at the birth anniversary of Musicologist Padma Shri Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. R. Sathyanarayana marking the two-day Indian Musicology Day, organised by Brahmavidya Pratishtana, Mysuru in association with Veena Visweswaran International Foundation, USA, DVG Balaga Pratishtana, Kanchana Srilakshminarayana Musical Academy Trust, Ursu Community, Parampare, Kala Sandesha Pratishtana, Srimatanga Samskrutika Samajika Academy Trust, Srividya Pratishtana and other National and International Art Associations, at RamaGovinda Rangamandira in Ramakrishnanagar here yesterday.

Noting that late Dr. Sathyanarayana has made enormous contribution to the field of music, Dr. Visweswaran lauded the organisers for instituting awards in his (Sathyanarayana) name for honouring senior music scholars and musicians.

Senior Scholar Dr. T.V. Venkatachala Sastry, in his address, said that iconic personalities from different fields have made outstanding contributions to the country. The contributions and services rendered by great personalities should be made available to the present generation, he said adding that the rich musical traditions of our country should continue without any stops.

‘Sahityasoori Award’ was conferred on noted scholar Dr. T.V. Venkatachala Sastry and ‘Dr. Sathyanarayana Commemorative Award’ was presented to Vid. H.K. Narasimhamurthy (Karnatak Violin), Vid. Madhukaram Prashanth Iyengar (Veena and Vaggeyakara) and Vid. Sringeri H.S. Nagaraj (Karnatak Music) on the occasion.

Also, two books on Indian Music — ‘Sri Kamalamba Jayati’  written by Dr. R. Visweswaran and ‘Arohini’, a compilation of music and dance articles, by Vidushi Kanchana Rohini Subbarathnam were released.

Veena exponent and Limca Book of Records holder Madhukaram Prashanth Iyengar presented a Veena concert on compositions of Dr. R. Sathyanarayana and other Karnatak Music composers of Mysuru.

Brahmavidya Pratishtana head Dr. R.S. Nandakumar, Vidushi Dr. Nagamani Srinath and Vidushi Vasantha Madhavi, Scholar Dr. Srikantam Nagendra Shastry, H.K. Narasimhamurthy, Prashanth Iyengar and others were present.

Today (June 9), Vidwan Sringeri H.S. Nagaraj will present a vocal concert at 6 pm. He will be accompanied by Vid. Dr. Thandavamurthy on violin and Vid. P.S. Sridhar on mridanga.

Also, Dr. R. Visweswaran will present a vocal concert. He will be accompanied by Vidushi Dr. Veena Suresh on violin and Vid. G.S. Ramanujam on mridanga.
