Mysuru: Kalabharathi, the Cultural Wing of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (BVB), Mysuru Kendra, has organised a musical feature titled ‘Girija Kalyana’ on Saturday (Oct. 28) at 6 pm at its Y.T. Thathachari Auditorium in Vijayanagar 1st Stage here.
Inspired by Virupaksha Pandit’s Chenna Basava Purana, the ancient Shiva Purana and many customary songs sung in the marriages and cultural functions, Vidu. B.H. Nagarathnamma, a senior Gamaka artiste and ‘Karnataka Kalashri’ awardee, has collated songs along with her compositions to weave the story of Girija Kalyana into a musical garland. This musical episode is being sung by six reputed artistes (students of Vidu. B.H. Nagarathnamma) led by Vidu. R.V. Padmalatha, who is a graded Gamaka artiste of All India Radio.
The musical depiction is about the divine couple Shiva and Parvati’s son Karthikeya slaying the demon Tarakasura. Giriraja, the King of Himalayas and his consort Meinadevi, beget Parvathi as their daughter after a long penance. Parvathi happens to be the reincarnation of Dakshayini, who was Shiva’s wife and was burnt during Daksha Yagnya. Unable to bear the troubles inflicted by Tarakasura, the devas pray Lord Shiva who in turn marries Parvathi and begets Karthikeya as son.
Karthikeya takes the command of the army of the devas and kills Tarakasura. Thus the matrimony of Shiva and Parvathi culminates in the well-being of the Universe.
