My bond with PM Modi is personal, not political: Ex-PM Deve Gowda

Mysuru: Amid various speculations doing rounds, following the reported denial of renomination of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda to Rajya Sabha (RS), whose tenure will end on June 25 this year, the JD(S) Supremo today sought to clear the air. Deve Gowda clarified that his relationship with NDA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will continue to remain till he was alive.

Addressing media persons at the Party Office J.P. Bhavan in Bengaluru this morning, Deve Gowda, whose party is one of the alliance partners of NDA, asserted that “It’s a personal rapport I share with Modi, not merely for any political gains, including one RS seat. It will continue even if I am not a member of any Constitutional body. I can call on Modi any time to discuss about the development of the State and the country and write to him on State-related issues. Besides, our bondage and our relationship will continue till Deve Gowda is alive.”

Delhi visit

Recalling his recent visit to New Delhi on May 26 to release the book ‘Apnapan’ authored by Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan, at the insistence of Modi again, to do the honours, Deve Gowda went on to add that, if he was intending to seek a RS entry again, he would have met the party leaders there itself to convey his intention. However, soon after the event, he chose to return to Bengaluru, he added.

Bonding since 2014

“I have always endorsed Modi’s leadership, the bonding that remains for the last 10 years, ever since Modi became the PM in 2014. The BJP had won 282 seats on its own and could have easily formed the Government, but chose to go along with the allies. Moreover, I have stood with Modi to see the country’s all-round development. The country is plagued by several burning issues,” he said.

Mincing no words, Deve Gowda said, “I don’t see any another leader who can compete with Modi. I will support Modi not only for overall development of the country, but also his grandiose vision to make  the country emerge as a trillion dollar economy. The defence and other sectors have witnessed exponential growth. In foreign countries too, Modi has been identified as a potential leader, earning a good opinion.”

Welcomes HDK…

The former PM  also welcomed the statement of his son and Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steels H.D. Kumaraswamy (HDK), over Rajya Sabha berth, who in his recent media briefing in Mandya had said, “There was nothing to bargain by having just 18 MLAs in the party.”

Deve Gowda hinted at working for the cause of Janata Dal (Secular), a regional party, with Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) polls expected to be announced any time.

JD(S) Bengaluru City President Ramesh Gowda and other leaders were present at the press meet.
