Mysore Medical College: Nostalgic memories of an alumnus

December 14, 2023

Sir,

I congratulate Dr. C.G. Narasimhan for his elaborate articles about Mysore Medical College (MMC) and development of medical education in Karnataka State over the years. He has highlighted various aspects of this College in his three-part article (Mysore Medical College Centenary: My Memories in SOM dated Dec. 9, 10 and 11).

As I am also an alumnus of Mysore Medical College, I wish to add more. I joined during August 1961 as student of Pre- Professional course leading to MBBS (New Scheme). It was Old Scheme till 1960 batch and there were some modifications in the entire course and examinations at various levels though duration was five-and-a-half-year plus one year Rotating Internship.

There were doyens of Professors like Anatomy Professor Dr. Raja Gopal, who got Ph.D for dissecting elephant; Pharmacological Professors Dr. Raghunath Rao and Dr. Harvey, Biochemistry Professor Lakshmi Narayanaih, Orthopaedic Professor Dr. Yathindranath Rai and his wife Dr. Amritha Rai, Dr. Krishna Bharghav and his wife as Pathology Professors, Dr. Indira Amla, Dr. J.V. Narayan and Dr. Padmini as Paediatric Professors, Dr. Lalitha Lingaih and Dr. Leelavathi Reddy as Gynaecology Professors. So also Dr. Sampath Kumar, Professor of Physiology and NCC Commander, Dr. Shariff and Dr. Krishnamurthy as Professors of Ophthalmology, Dr. Anekar, Professor of Preventive Medicine.

Condensed medicine batchmates Dr. Kamala Raman, Dr. Shanthi Raman and Dr. Vedavathi were with me during the clinical course.

My nostalgia goes farther away 62 years and deeper attachment with this College where I got MBBS though I did my MD Medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore.

A full-time alumnus has deep respect, affection and trust with that institute. Also, there are temporary and migrant alumni, who join School, College or University and leave to another for their own reasons.
