Mysuru to get 3,000 tree saplings from Rajahmundry

Mysore/Mysuru: To make the city greener, Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) is planning to get 3,000 tree saplings from Rajahmundry of Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking after participating in the World Environment Day celebration held at Hasiru Mysuru Nursery near Devarayanakere on Mysuru-Nanjangud Road yesterday, MUDA Commissioner Dr. D.B. Natesh said, “We are planning to bring 3,000 tree saplings from Rajahmundry. Saplings in general have a bleak survival rate and need to be nurtured before they can grow into plants and then trees.

All these saplings of flower and fruit bearing trees have already grown up to 20 feet height. Taller saplings have 80 percent survival rate compared to the saplings of shorter height. For this reason, we are bringing them from Rajahmundry.”

“This season, MUDA is aiming to plant 25,000 saplings in Mysuru. We are also planning to outsource the maintenance work and appoint a person in each of the eight zones of MUDA. In addition, we are aiming to create 10 additional posts to monitor this ambitious programme. If any organisation comes forward to look after the saplings, we are ready to hand over such responsibilities to them, but they themselves have to bear the cost,” he said.
