Couple accused of cheating Delhi-based retired Colonel of Rs. 41 lakh
Mysuru: A Mysuru couple accused of cheating a retired Colonel in Delhi of nearly Rs. 41 lakh is now being searched for by the Delhi Police.
The case has similarities to the Bollywood film ‘Bunty Aur Babli’, with the couple allegedly winning the trust of their victims with different stories before moving on.
M.G. Sumanth and Sahana Sumanth, reportedly residents of No. 463, 6th Main Road, ‘Badami Building,’ behind B.M. Hospital in Jayalakshmipuram, Mysuru, have been named as accused in the case.
The couple allegedly cheated Delhi-based retired Colonel Pankaj Punit Singh of more than Rs. 35 lakh through bank transactions and cash and took jewellery worth about Rs. 6 lakh, according to the FIR.
Two Police officers from Naraina Vihar Police Station in West Delhi visited Mysuru looking for the absconding couple.
Retired Colonel’s complaint
The case was registered following a complaint by Col. (retd.) Pankaj Punit Singh. The Naraina Vihar Police registered FIR No. 58/2026 under Sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
According to the FIR, Sumanth and Sahana approached the Colonel. They claimed that Sumanth was working as a ‘landing gear analyst’ with Airbus in Houston, Texas and was drawing a good salary.
They initially sought Rs. 60,000 in cash. Sumanth later allegedly told the Colonel that his Indian bank accounts had been frozen because of tax-related issues.
Sumanth allegedly continued to seek financial help from the Colonel and from July 2024 to February 2025, more than Rs. 35 lakh was given through bank transactions and cash.
According to the FIR, Sumanth also issued several signed post-dated cheques to the Colonel. But when the Colonel tried to deposit them, they were dishonoured. The Colonel further alleged that in late January 2025, Sumanth said, he was going to Bengaluru to sort out the tax issue. The accused then allegedly took away a suitcase containing jewellery worth Rs. 6 lakh from the Colonel’s house.
The case is being heard by the Judicial Magistrate First Class-08 at Patiala House Courts, New Delhi. Court issued separate proclamation notices against Sumanth and Sahana on Aug. 7, 2026, directing them to appear before it.
Following the Court order, two Police officers from Naraina Vihar Police Station came to Mysuru in search of the couple. The Police have appealed to anyone with information about the whereabouts of Sumanth and Sahana to inform the nearest Police Station or contact the SHO of Naraina Vihar Police Station on Mob: 87508-71122.
