Nanjangud: As 51,000 cusecs of water is released into River Kapila, the surroundings of Nanjangud Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple and the localities in low-lying areas have been submerged.
Apart from 40,000 cusecs of water from Kabini Dam, 9,000 cusecs from Taraka Dam, 2,000 cusecs of water was discharged from Nugu Dam, totalling 51,000 cusecs of water.
The bath area near the river, Hadinaru Kalu Mantapa are totally submerged and the river water touching the steps of the Mudi Katte building, where the devotees tonsure their head, as an offering to the deity.
As a precaution, the Police have barricaded the entry to bath area, making alternative arrangement for the devotee to take a shower at the bath room adjacent to Dasoha Bhavan, where the mass feeding is arranged for the devotees.
The Parashurama Temple is totally submerged, following the flooding at River Gundlu, the tributary of River Kapila. Water has gushed into Ayyappa Swamy Temple and Chamundeshwari Temple premises, triggering the possibilities of water entering the Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple premises too, if the water level at the river rises further.
The overflowing River Gundlu has affected the residents of Hallada Keri, a low lying area behind Srikanteshwara Swamy Temple, with total five houses completely under water. The residents of Thopina Beedhi, Kurubageri, Vokkalageri, Saraswati Colony, Rajaji Colony are feared over the possibilities of flood.
Tahsildar Shivakumar Kasnur told media persons, the residents of the taluk need not fear over the present situation, as the Taluk Administration is fully prepared to tackle the situation. The Gruel Centres will be opened, if the water level in the river rises further. Those living on the river banks should move to safer locations.
