3-month-old baby and 50-year-old man treated with advanced procedures for the first time in Mysuru region
Mysore/Mysuru: Kidney is one of the vital organs that help our body to process waste. Any impact on them can have multiple repercussions. It is also one of the organs that can be saved if treated at the right time with the appropriate treatment. Such was the case with a 3-month-old male baby and 50-year-old man whom the doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital treated recently.
The baby boy was diagnosed with blockage in both his kidneys at birth. Though he was constantly being monitored through serial ultrasound scans, the condition was worsening. Hence his consulting doctors referred him to the Urology Department of Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysuru.
The Urology team under Dr. S. Nagesh, Consultant Urologist, admitted the child and did a thorough investigation. It was diagnosed that the blockage was leading to an increase in the size of the kidney’s collecting system. The baby’s right kidney system had enlarged from 11 mm at birth to 25 mm at 3 months of age.
The team of doctors discussed various possibilities that could be used to treat the child. They felt Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty, an advanced laparoscopic surgery would be suitable. Though this procedure is performed routinely, doing it for a 3-month-old baby was a challenging task.
The team decided to first address the kidney on the right side. The surgery was carried out in less than 3 hours and the child was discharged within 3 days. Left side surgery will be performed after 3 to 4 months. This is the youngest child to undergo a Laparoscopic Pyeloplasty procedure in Mysuru region.
In the case of 50-year-old man, he was referred to NH as he was suffering from pain in right side of his abdomen. On evaluation, it was found that he had developed a big cancer mass in the right kidney which was going into the inferior vena cava (large blood vessel inside the abdomen). His condition was quite challenging with the mass close to 10 cm.
The doctors felt the most effective treatment would be Laparoscopic Right Radical Nephrectomy, with Ivc (Inferior Vena Cava) Thrombectomy, a procedure to avoid big open surgery. However, as Laparoscopic Right Radical Nephrectomy, with Ivc Thrombectomy was the most optimal option, the team of surgeons post consent from family performed the procedure. The 5-hour procedure was successful and the patient was discharged within 3 days.
Addressing a press meet in city, Clinical Director of the Hospital, Dr. M.N. Ravi said “During laparoscopic surgery, surgeons make tiny incisions for instrument access and long cuts are avoided. Surgery is done via observation through the video camera which provides a magnified, more precise view of the surgical area. The experienced team of senior surgeons and anaesthetists at NH routinely perform even complex laparoscopic procedures with excellent results. The benefits include shorter hospital stay, faster healing of smaller incisions, less pain and blood loss.”
