Patient treated using the most innovative DIPS procedure
Mysore/Mysuru: Twenty-five-year-old Niveditha (name changed) has been relieved of Chronic Budd-Chiari Syndrome, a rare condition, by the doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Mysuru.
The patient was treated using DIPS procedure (Direct Intrahepatic Portocaval Shunt), the latest and the most innovative treatment modality for the condition.
Budd-Chiari Syndrome is a condition in which the liver veins are blocked or narrowed by a clot or inflammation. It is caused by Myeloproliferative disease, Sickle Cell disease, abdominal infection and at times pregnancy.
Symptoms of this disease are pain in the upper abdomen, jaundice, bleeding in the esophagus, enlarged and tender liver, hepatic encephalopathy, vomiting and fluid accumulation in abdomen.
Niveditha was suffering from swelling of abdomen since one year. As days progressed the swelling started and she consulted a doctor. As advised, Niveditha underwent fluid removal process for almost a year but her condition did not improve. This bothered the family and they started searching for a quality healthcare provider. The search led them to Narayana Hospital (NH). Niveditha was admitted under Dr. Satheesh Rao and team which conducted a CT scan, endoscopy and MR venogram and, it was revealed that she was suffering from Chronic Budd-Chiari Syndrome.
The most followed treatment modality for this Syndrome is anticoagulants (blood thinners) if the disease is identified early. But, if diagnosis is late, it will call for either TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt) whereby the blood is re-routed from blocked veins. If all hepatic veins are completely blocked, TIPS may not be possible.
In this case, the condition had led to blockage of veins and doctors advised DIPS. The procedure was successful and the patient was shifted to ward within two days. The patient becomes the first to have undergone DIPS procedure in Mysuru.
Elaborating about the case, Dr. Shailesh Pene, NH, said, “In the case of Niveditha her Chronic Budd-Chiari Syndrome had progressed and affected her Hepatic Veins. Performing any intervention in such a circumstance is a high risk one. But owing to the team’s (including anaesthetist) deep expertise in managing complex cases we were successful.”
